- Are Slytherins destined to be evil.
- August 21st, 2010
Yeah, Slytherins are a nasty bunch in Harry Potter, at least, thats the stereotype. It does hold true for most of the Death Eaters, and Draco and his gang, but not all Slytherins were evil.
Severus was harsh, abrasive, and prejudiced, but he also deeply cared for Lily long after she had died, and was covertly working to bring about Voldie's downfall. Horace Slughorn was more concerned with his own comfort and connections than anything else, but he also returned to Hogwarts during the battle (along with many others, including no doubt those witches and wizards he had groomed in their school days.) And there was Regulus, who believed in blood purity and the superiority of wizards, but who ultimately disagreed with Voldemort and tried to undermine him.
a large part of the Slytherin's portayal is that Harry doesnt really interact with them beyond Draco's crowd, and the general prejudice against Slytherin's clearly encourages them to be insular and conceited. A large part of how the Syhterin's turn out is clearly a case of nurture honing nature. Take kids who have traits that make them ambitious and self-interested, and put them in with a group of people who encourage those traits.
As a case in point, look at Neville. His portrayal in the early books didnt really match the Gryffindor type, but being put in an environment where bravery and loyalty are encouraged, and look how he turned out.
